GQRP Conventions

This year’s Convention took place in parallel with the Telford Hamfest at the Harper Adams University just north of Telford. It is a really nice venue with lots of space and ample car parking.

The event opened with a Buildathon starting at 15:00 on Saturday 3 September. The project was the Kanga UK, End Fed Half Wave Antenna Tuner with built in SWR indicator. Cost was be £15. These special Convention kits are only available to members attending the event in person. You had tobook your place in advance by e-mailing Graham G3MFJ.

By starting the Buildathon in the afternoon we hoped there will be more time for socialising in the bar after the soldering irons have cooled. People were invited to bring a project you would like to show to others.

There was be a buffet supper for those attending the Buildathon, and any members who wish to socialise.

If you wanted to stay on campus on the Saturday night, there were a limited number of rooms available.

We had three talks confirmed for Sunday 4th of September:

11:00 - Getting Started with Microprocessors by Martin Evans, GM5JDG, author of the book 'Arduino in Action'. Martin's talk will be aimed at using microprocessors in QRP radios, rather than the technicalities of computing, programming, etc.

12:00 - The G-QRP Club Scratch Build Group Project by Steve Hartley, G0FUW, Chairman of G-QRP Club. Steve's talk will cover the 17m Sudden SSB transceiver modules and the experiences of the members who have been building it as a first scratch build project.

13:30 - The Writings of the Reverend George Dobbs, G3RJV by Michael Clarke, Mi5MTC. Michael has been compiling a bibliography of work of G3RJV. His talk will cover everything from Ladybird books to the Practical Wireless series "Carrying on In the Practical Way". Michael will also show many examples of the G3RJV projects included in the talk.

Following on from the success of our virtual Conventions in 2020 and 2021, the talks will be streamed live via Zoom and recorded for watching later. There will be a small fee for the Zoom seats, and you will need your membership number to buy a ticket. Members can book a ticket for the live stream here:

Club Sales was be in attendance, alongside lots of other traders and all the usual rally attractions. Further details of the Telford Hamfest are here:

Post Convention Update:

All those who paid for on-line access should now have the video links for the three talks. Please let me know if that is not the case.

As in the last two years, the videos will go on general release around Christmas time as a wee prezzie.

73, Steve, G0FUW
